I remember when teenagers were old...

Oldest Boy turns 11 on Monday.  We promised him a "room pet".  He researched, snakes, rodents, reptiles and birds and decided he wanted one parakeet.  He originally thought he wanted two parakeets so they would keep each other company while he was at school, but the bird guy told him they would bond with each other and be difficult to tame.

We bought the parakeet yesterday, and we've all been talking to it, singing to it, complimenting it - all in an effort to socialize the bird - per the bird guy's instructions.

I walked in Oldest Boy's room last night and he was playing The Beach Boys.  I showed him how to do the Twist and we danced for a few minutes.  Middle Boy and Toddler Child joined us.  I told the kids how their grandparents used to dance to this, then I asked Oldest Boy why he was listening to The Beach Boys.

"Because the bird guy said my parakeet would enjoy classical music."

Didn't you have a bird growing up?My boys feel very retro when they listen to Queen (by way of Wayne's World) Party time, excellent....

Before I had Aiden I worked at Fred Meyer. Since I worked very early in the morning I had one task that was totally unrelated to my job: putting out the new CDs on Tuesday mornings. Imagine my surprise when a compilation of 80's hits was destined for the 'oldies' section.

And you are a very nice mom. I might someday allow my kids to have an 80 lb. dog that poops all over my yard and sheds all over my house, but there will be no birds, lizards, frogs, turtles, snakes, hamsters or guinea pigs.

I should also mention that the highlight of my boys month will come next week when they get to watch my brother's new snake devour a live mouse. Good times.

The Floydster - Funny, huh? You're welcome.

Mrs. D. - The bird's still stressed. Makes me feel bad. Something's not right about keeping a bird in a cage.

Claire - That's true!

Robin - Yes! I had a parakeet named Larry. Remember, he would pick stuff out of our teeth and poop on my homework.

Tristan - That hurts! 80's music labeled "oldies". Ouch. I don't think I could watch a snake eat a live mouse. You're a stud Mom.

Thanks for visiting my blog, Chris. My first reaction when I read this entry was to "I told the kids how their grandparents used to dance to this." And then I thought "crap - I AM one of those grandparents - this just can't be!!!!" (although the Twist in French was a bit of a twist to the Twist!)

I made the mistake of letting my daughter get a kitten when she was about 7. That cat turned out to be the cat from hell, who stayed with her dad when we separated. Even though she was a really nasty cat, both he and I cried when he had to have her put to sleep about a year ago, she was 14.

Hope the bird gets acclimated soon.

And the idea of the Beach Boys as classical music is simply precious.

that comment is totally CLASSIC! Do you remember when we were young? DO YOU? It's becoming more and more blurred...

I once had a parakeet that bit me on the lip. You can still see the tiny, tiny scar If you look close enough. :-)

So funny! This story is classic(al)!

My son's birthday is Monday, too. He turns 18 and I'm handling it well. NOT.

Thanks so much for stopping in at my place and commenting! I'm looking forward to getting to know you through your blog!

That is funny! My 5 year old says funny stuff all the time so I'm glad to see they still are just as funny at 11!

Oh my gosh that is funny! My new sister-in-law had no clue who I was talking about when I recently mentioned The Partridge Family. It made me ill.

PS: Bird = winged mouse.

My Dad has been visiting....and I read your post to him the other night and we all got a good laugh!

Happy Birthday to your boy!
I grew up listening to the Beach Boys, but that was my parents doing. I'm grateful. I missed most of the music from the 80s that way.
