The Justice League

Halloween is not one of my favorite holidays.  For many reasons.  I don't like how creepy it's gotten over the years.  I've seen toddlers wearing the Scream mask, and others with graphically drawn wounds on their faces.  What happened to clowns and old, fat farmers?  Gypsies, and little boys dressed like their dad, using their mother's eyebrow pencil to draw a mustache on their face?

It's also a problem at our house because of Oldest Boy's diabetes.  A little candy once in a while is fine, but to gluttonously "go for it" isn't good for him - any child really.  Middle Boy's allergic to wheat and dairy, so again,  presents a problem.  Now that they're older, 11 and 9, they understand the limitations of their individual bodies.  It was much more difficult a few years ago.

Without further ado...

Boys and Mary as superheros.

I knew Toddler Child was going to be Batman, so I excitedly bought Mary (the dog) her Wonder Woman costume.  I begged Chris to be Robin... he wouldn't do it.  Middle Boy had a Superman costume from last year and I picked up The Flash for Oldest Boy on sale.

I confess that Oldest Boy and Middle Boy only wore these for the photos.  They said they'd be mortified to be seen in the neighborhood actually trick-or-treating in them.  I think they had fun once they were in them though...

Boys posing.
Boys showing their muscles.

After pictures, the two older boys changed into their real costumes and got on with the more important business of trick-or-treating.  [For Toddler Child, it was "twinkle-tweeting".]  Oldest Boy was a Jedi and Middle Boy was a CLONE trooper, not a stormtrooper.  They both made their costumes (except the helmet).

Ready to

Once the kids were off, Mary had her own important business - guarding the Ross Cave and running upstairs to stare at the bird periodically.  You never know when a parakeet might attack.

Wonder Woman Mary guarding the Ross Cave.

We feel sooooo much safer with Wonder Mary on watch.  Her costume commands the respect she's always deserved and the Lasso of Truth concerns us all...

I am laughing sooooo hard at Wonder Mary! That is the best costume I have ever seen!

The boys look cute too!

My mom always made my costumes, i was never anything scary (I have been a gypsy, a present, pippi long stalking, a jester, etc).

Middle Child is gluten free! Move to Australia - it'll make your life so much easier - pretty much every restaurant has a gluten-free alternative, OR a separate gluten-free menu. And do you know about Pamela's brownie mix? Comes in a pink bag and they are the best! brownies! ever! (there is a dairy free alternative). they are delicious and easy to make.

I love that oldest and middle child made their own costumes...my kids would love to do that and I am going to give them the opportunity to do so next year. And Mary's costume is a hoot. I'm normally opposed to pet clothing and/or costumes, but this was too good. As an after thought I wished that I had bought Ralph a Yoda costume.

We never dressed up as anything scary when I was a kid. And I brought my little ones out early because I knew that they would be scarred for life by any teenage monsters. Apparently there was a Joker out on the early side and another toddler neighbor had to cut her trick or treating short due to the terror that he caused.

I LOVE the Justice League. I had two supermen for reasons that I explained on Thursday - but we did end up going door to door with a super girl for a while - so that was fun.

LOVE IT!!! Great costumes, I love when people dress with a common theme. :-)

We don't need all that candy either, so I am going to pilfer through it and take some to school for my bribe, I mean, reward jar. ;-)

Mary's costume is the most hilarious thing I have seen in ages. And I am impressed that the boys made their own costumes. The most my kids do is pick them out from a catalogue and bug me every day for two months as to whether they've arrived yet. Cute pics.

Okay, first and foremost - the kids look so adorable. There is just something about seeing a child in a Halloween costume that makes me almost believe they aren't the same alien-like beings that spew vomit and poop.

And now, I must tell you that I almost just peed my pants when I saw Mary. AND SHE IS TOTALLY SMILING! That is the most hysterical thing I have ever seen!

omg I love your damn dog!!! Those pictures are so great- and I love that they changed!!! I detest Halloween- mostly because it's just a commercial conspiracy. But whatever.....

The freaking pics cracked me up! The action shots are classic comic book posin.

Connie - It fit her so well too!

Deidre - Yes. Middle Boy is gluten-free, and I think I've tried Pamela's brownie mix. There are a few good brownie mix's. I forgot, are you gluten-free?

Tristan - Mary was Princess Leia a couple of years ago. Ralph should have been Yoda. Maybe next year...

Kate - That new Joker costume is terrifying. My kids would have been traumatized if they saw that on Friday night.

Mrs. D. - Wish I could give you some of our candy for your bribe jar. Nothing wrong with bribes - they work!

Corbie - Don't be too impressed with the boys' homemade costumes. They just used clothes, magic markers and sticky felt. I prefer the store bought costumes (bah humbug). They enjoyed it though.

Sherri - Funny you say that, because I thought it looked like Mary was smiling too. And you're right, even though the kids look cute, the definitely still spew vomit and poop.

Vodka Mom - You're preachin to the choir about Halloween. Amen.

Punk Rock Dad - It's interesting what societal norms do to kids. The two older boys had a blast wearing those costumes and enjoyed "posin" and playing, but were concerned about what neighbor kids would say. Kinda sad.

I am gluten-free, also.

Like everyone else, I wet my pants when I saw Mary! Parker was so excited about Halloween, she changed her costume from Jasmine to a leopard princess. She wanted to dress up the Golden Doodles, but I could barely afford the 1 kid of mine who still wears a costume. Carter and Hayden didn't have me fooled, though. I know that they would have LOVED to dress up as well, but their friends weren't doing it....sad :(Your boys look very cool in BOTH sets of costumes!

Mary and the boys looked awesome! I wanted our dog Elway to be Darth but hubby thought it would scar him for life :) Trevor was also a clone trooper but was constantly annoyed by anyone calling him a storm trooper! My son and I love Halloween but not for the scary stuff or candy just for the dress up and fun decor. Homemade costumes are the best as I remember being either gypsy, clown, hobo or fifties girl! I know I need help in the creativy area.Love Em

Deidre - I need to email you about this...

Robin - I bet Parker looked adorable. Maybe Mary can be Jasmine or a leopard princess next year.

Samantha - Thanks. Mary's definitely "her own little wonder world" in our house.

Em - Look at you. Commenting on a blog. I LOVE it when you do that! Elway should have been Darth. You have to start including him in these things. Next year Trevor should be Batman, and Elway should be Robin. Start working on Daryl NOW. XOXOXOXOXO

Oh, so cute. But the dog...the dog is something else. I wonder if they make those for guinea pigs?
November 4, 2008 | Unregistered Commentertinsenpup
Tinsenpup - I bet we could come up with SOMETHING for a guinea pig...

I love the Wonder Dog costume! If I could get my dogs to tolerate costumes, they'd be in them in a heartbeat!
