Resourceful

When a four-year-old boy has his favorite Lego sword taken away because he's been "battacking" the dog and his brothers and his parents, make sure he doesn't see where it's been stashed.  It's possible, he'll pretend he doesn't miss the sword for a day or two, then when you least expect it...

...curious noises are heard coming from his room, which is located above the office where his mother sits quietly writing.  Not terrible noises... just curious.

The noises cease and the four-year-old boy casually enters the office and ponders aloud, "I wish I could fly," as he sighs.

His mother smiles and replies sympathetically, "I wish I could fly sometimes too, honey."

An hour later, the mother makes one of her routine patrols of the house, picking up toys to be returned to their respective bins while dusting banisters with her forearms as she motors up the stairs.

Upon entering the four-year-old boy's closet, the mother discovers a project has been underway.  A project that had not been approved because it would have most likely resulted in severe injury or death.

Attempt to reach the sword.

The ladder. The climbing rope.

Perched on the very top shelf of his closet, was exactly where the four-year-old's father had stashed the sword... for safekeeping.

There were no injuries or deaths, and the boy and his sword have been reunited.  The mother had cocktail hour early that day.

Yeah, my daughter did this once in an effort to reach my stash of Oreos. That one drawer next to the oven hasn't worked much since . . .

OMG that is so funny. They're so much smarter and sneakier than we give them credit for!

Thank god for liquor! {And for enterprising young men. You may just have a budding structural engineer on your hands. This is good. When he's 30!}

Keep refilling. You may need it.

Is he still battacking poor Mary?

The hangers, Chrisy...I just laughed my ass off at those alone. Adorable.

Oh my lord, I just laughed so hard I spit tea. He sounds an awful lot like a four year old I used to know, once upon a time (before he became a now 21 year old man!). My four year old used to use the shelves on the inside of the fridge door as a ladder to reach the "bopsickles" in the freezer. I'll never forget how hard my heart lurched the day I caught him mid-climb, just as the "shelf" gave way under his weight and dumped him crashing to the floor.

He was fine - nothing a "bopsickle" couldn't cure. But I didn't have use of the storage space in my fridge door for three years after that.

Okay, that is so cute...it must be so hard to keep a straight face while doling out the discipline.

It's one of those moments where you know you are supposed to be mad - but instead you're really impressed (proud even?)

I continue to be amazed at the inventiveness of my kids and the crap they get into.

He is a smart one!

That's a seriously cool ladder.

I need to meet this little chap, I still use coathangers in a similar fashion to grab my sword, I mean er' 'stuff' off the top shelf. Fabulous pics.

Middle-Aged-Woman just emailed me and loved your son's "bopsickles" word. I imagine your heart stopped when you witnessed his plan failing. It's a miracle we're all not alcoholics!

Yes. Now she battacks back. We have trouble.
November 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChris
They're great. It's difficult for them to really hurt one another. We got ours at LegoLand.
November 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChris
Totally proud. You get it! :-)

Great pics Chris! They always find a way to get things... done. Probably a future engineer.

Yep that is pretty gorgeous I have to say - and documentary evidence to be produced at his 21st birthday!

Your writing is so funny and engaging!

I love you!

And glad no injuries or deaths were sustained in the very resourceful retrieval of the Lego Sword.

Just got back and I laughed at the "visual" of R. battacking Mary..... I'm thinking maybe there will be natural consequences!! haha.... Hope Mary has dull teeth.....

Their internet fairy god mother had nothing to do with this.

Although I wish I did. :P

This is too cute for words, or horrifying, depending who you ask, BB.

(PS: I am horridly behind on my blog reading, but working my way back now. Miss you!)

What is considered early for cocktail hour?

I am just asking for researchical reasons.
November 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSan Diego Momma
That is so funny. The hangers are what got me! He was going to try to climb up them?! Hahaha! I have a feeling my daughter would do the same thing to get to her favorites!

It's obvious you are raising a little guy that can think outside the box! Hurray for you and hurray for his inventiveness. We need a few good problem solvers in the making. :)

One day he's going to be the most valuable player on an Odyssey of the Mind team. If you don't know what Odyssey of the Mind is, Google it. Both my kids have competed and my son's team went to the World Finals twice! My daughter's team won the European division when we lived there and in America her team won regionals and placed second in state.
