Dear George Lucas

Middle Boy [9] wrote a letter to George Lucas recently...

The poor kid wrote the letter in early March, but for some reason it took me until late April to mail it for him.  When I finally sent his letter and drawing to Mr. Lucas, I enclosed the following note...

Chris and I crossed our fingers and hoped, someone... anyone... would acknowledge Middle Boy's efforts.  We explained to Middle Boy that George Lucas, not unlike Santa Claus, has lots of helpers and probably can't personally reply to every piece of mail he receives.

A few days ago, a special, large envelope from Lucasfilm Ltd. arrived.  I don't know who was more excited in our house -- the boys, or Chris and I.  [Click on the image to enlarge.]

A few pieces of Lucasfilm Ltd. swag were included, and Middle Boy handled the content of the letter with surprising maturity.  He said he understood why they needed to protect themselves... said he "knows the feeling" because of his chapter book idea.  [Middle Boy won't even allow Chris or me to view some of his movie or book ideas.  You never know who will steal a good idea, he says.]

He was thrilled with receiving anything from a George Lucas employee.

The original envelope, letter and artwork were returned... but the envelope had been opened, and it was obvious his "unsolicited submission or idea" had been read and reviewed.  If an Auquatrooper shows up on The Clone Wars series?  That's our boy!

Very cool! And that was a very nice (form) letter they sent back. He should frame that sucker and mount it about his drawings.

I'll have my kids keep an eye out for an Aquatrooper . . .

That is fantastic! It may have been a form letter but I suspect they are inundated with stuff like this and the fact that they took the time to respond at all is very special! And made one boy very happy..

YAY! I'm so glad he got SOMETHING! I guess you're going to have to tell me if an aquatrooper appears, as it is doubtful that I will know otherwise...! (don't tell the world's biggest fan, please!!) :)

He is handling it better than I am. I'm disappointed. It is very nice that they wrote back and offered swag. What a remarkable young man you have there!
I think that is so cool that you got a response at all! And bravo to him for reacting so reasonably. I'm sure I would have had a fit and pounded my fists on the floor...

That's a much better letter then I recieved when I wrote the President in Elementary. May his imagination keep growing and the force be with him.

Obi Wan would be proud of this young protege. He's a screenwriter just waiting to happen and the world is truly his oyster. Awesome!

You post title alone made me laugh because my son and I were playing with Star Wars legos for several hours today and I was thinking about the years of Star Wars mania in my future.

I love that they wrote back. I also LOVE your son's letter and drawings.

I think it's so important to encourage our boys to dream big. Why not? Anything could happen.

:)

Well, well, well, Chris I do believe you will have your old age richly provided for by your genius son. And he'll get to the top because of YOU and your support. Way cool for your boy.

Just way cool all 'round!

My son would totally freak out if he got anything from George Lucas! I think it's great that he is so creative and ambitious. I was the same way when I was young, always making my own books with illustrations and everything. And I, too, despised copycats- UGH! Kyle wrote to the president in February and sent artwork, but we have yet to receive anything from the white house. *Hoping*

That is so great!

You definitely have a talented boy on your hands! Can I get his autograph now, so when he's as famous as George Lucus, I can say I knew him (kinda) when he was a child?

It sounds like you have a really bright and creative child. The letter was awesome and at least he received some swag and a cool letter on Lucasfilm letter head. That's more than I ever received from Kirk Cameron or Duran Duran.
You are an awesome mom.

Middle Boy is an awesome boy, and, it seems to me, the perfect age for Laura.

I'm glad that Lucasfilm replied and sent him stuff, but "unread" and "no"? Yeah, I'm a lawyer. I get why. But, frick, this is why I don't practice law (not really, but I feel like being all human and shit right now).

Good job, Middle Boy!!!
Middle Boy and LD need to get together. Between them, I do believe they could create the next movie-making empire.

I love to hear about kids actually "doing" something and not just talking about it. Sending a letter is a very mature thing to do, period. And the fact that he took the lead on something like this ("mom - mail the letter already, will you?!) is pretty impressive.

Wow, so cool he got a response. That's awesome. Love the artwork.

Proud of him must you be...

Great that he got some swag along with that letter... His Auquatropper is awesome!

That is so sweet. What a great letter he wrote. And I love that they took the time to write a nice one back.
That was a COOL letter. I loved the art he included. He's clearly given this a lot of thought and it's amazing that he wanted to present those thoughts to George Lucas. Beautiful!

I hate to say, I understand why they have to do that, but I am so glad he got a response, and that he was thrilled with it.I love his art, and I am hoping Mom laminates it :-)

Isn't it wonderful to know that creating has become a passion for your son. Obviously he has learned by example.

One day he'll be walking into Mr Lucas' office saying, "Remember me? I'm the kid that sent you that great idea back in 2009."

Is it weird that I cried when I first read this? How about that I cried the second time too? Something about middle boy's goal and Mom and Dad's desire that he at least get a response and all the extra effort on everyone's part to make it come together (including George Lucas' staff). Best parent/child/movie producer story I've heard in a long time. :)

How great! As the mother of three boys, we have our share of funds invested in all things LucasFilms as well. This makes me happy.

I was so inspired by your story, I forgot to tell you I love your blog. This is for you.

I've decided there MIGHT be a God after all!!

I am so happy that they sent something! I was all ready to go over to George's house and kick some ass.

Middle Boy is awesome and welcome in the Us & Them home any day. Is he familiar with Wookieepedia?

I love that middle boy has big dreams. His story reminded me of my oldest boy and his unwavering determination that he can do anything and be anything. I hope middle boy goes on to work for Mr. Lucas and produces those aqua troopers!

I can't wait to the time your kid gets hired by the Lucas co. I think it's amazing that your son has such a passion at such an early age. You read story after story about famous artists who tell us that they've been passionate about their art from a young age. I think you're son is going to do something great one day

Oh my goodness! At first I was offended by the content of the letter, but I think the end is more upbeat and encouraging. Way to follow through for your kiddo. I have made many promises (a trip to Legoland, anyone???) that I haven't followed through on.

Hi Chris

Congratulations on your running accomplishments and continued running success.

I was impressed that you got a response, but I was much more impressed with your sons imagination and creativity.

Best of luck in everything.

I love the Aquatrooper idea and the picture was wonderful! I'm glad they at least responded to him, though I have to admit, I would have been a tad crushed - I mean, come on - that was a kick-butt idea, and how cute was that letter he wrote? That kid is going places, with the amount of Chutzpah he has!

The letter killed me, but not as much as him protecting his good ideas from his thieving parents

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

My 11-yr-old daughter is a fan of the syndicated comic strip Pajama Diaries. She sent the writer/artist fan mail, telling her, among other things, that she wanted to be a graphic designer when she grew up. The woman wrote back, not once, but twice, encouraging my Girl. So inspiring.
Smart kid, jealous of his ambition
