Speedo-Mon

We're home for the rest of the summer so that means the boys will have to play with a hose in the backyard for fun, and we'll take an occasional day trip to check something off the list of Still To Do And See In Utah.

The good news is, our boys love playing in the hose. Toddler Child insists on wearing his fast swimsuit [Speedo], and  Mary joins our nearly-mistaken-for-Jamaican children while they play with water. They wear plenty of sunscreen. We're proud of our funky whiteness.

A couple of days ago, Chris and I took the boys to Antelope Island State Park at the Great Salt Lake. We've lived in Utah nearly seven years and had never taken the time to visit the lake for which the state is so famous. I called for information and was told by a Very Nice Woman, that there was a beach, paddle boat rentals, a bistro, public restrooms and outdoor showers. I was told the salt content in the lake is 3% higher than the ocean, only brine shrimp live in the water, and there are several brine flies at the water's edge. The Very Nice Woman said the brine flies create a black ribbon on the beach and they will separate as you walk through them. Don't worry, she said, they don't bite, and once you get beyond them it's just you and the buoyant waters of the Great Salt Lake!

We weren't expecting Maui, but I envisioned a long day on the "island".

We spent two hours on Antelope Island, and one hour would have been plenty. There is a beach, but it should be called something different because the connotation that goes along with "beach" left us all feeling confused and disappointed. The bistro was run-down and closed. The three paddle boats available for rent were filthy and full of dead brine flies and live wolf spiders. We passed on the paddle boat rental.

There were BILLIONS of brine flies. BILLIONS. The ribbon the Very Nice Woman described, was several feet wide in places. The flies didn't bite; that part was true. But they peppered the top of the water as far as my eye could see. They were... icky. Middle Boy, lover of all living things, shrieked as he high-stepped through them to get in and out of the water.

Chris and the boys getting ready to enter the lake.

Chris and Boys - Great Salt Lake

[Chris would like it known that he does not appreciate this picture, but he won't use his Blog Power of Veto. I think it's the outfit, old swim trunks and Super Friends t-shirt. I reminded him he was about to enter a cesspool so it was important to wear disposable clothes.]

If you click on the following photo to enlarge, you might be able to see the brine flies [that the Very Nice Woman said would only be at the water's edge] all over the lake.

Oldest Boy, Toddler Child in lake with brine flies

I brought my bathing suit, but couldn't get beyond the smell and the flies. I kept my clothes on and waded in to my knees, but was miserable as I shooed flies, took pictures, and looked at my watch every 30 seconds hoping the kids would tire of the experience as I tolerated it.

Me in lake. Ewww.

Luckily the boys didn't need too much time bobbing in the brine fly water, and Toddler Child got salt in his eye. We told him prior to getting in the water to be careful of his eyes, and we also told him there were brine shrimp living in the lake. He confused the two and cried as we walked back to the car, "I have shrimp in my eye."

I'm glad we saw the lake and swam in it [shudder], but I don't think we'll be returning. It's big, salty, and interesting, but if you want to check this site off of your list of places to see, call me for information instead of the Very Nice Woman.

Love the picture of Mary. She appears to be airborne! Love the big brim on the sun-hat, too.

Ask Fab sometime about taking our boys and a friend's two daughters for a "fun" bike ride to same park. Midway across the causeway (freeway!?) to the park they bailed. And the only time I have ever been close to the Salt Lake I stayed in the car -- I will always be grateful to Lydia for having fallen asleep just as we got there. Did you see bird skeletons? That's their main memory of the trip.

Alix - I look pissed, not hot!

Claire - I like the big brim too. It does the job of protecting my Retin-A'd face from the sun. Love, Chris

Judy - We didn't see the bird skeletons, but we could smell them. It was even worse than I portrayed in this post. I can't wait to hear Fab's story! You guys have some good ones... you should start a blog. :-)

Ohmygod what a funny, timely post. Matt and I (and the foo) are planning our trip out there right now. I had thought that the Great Salt Lake should be on our list of must sees. Now I see that we simply need to stop by your house and play in a sprinkler in the backyard, and it will be tons more fun (and cleaner and better smelling) for our entire family.

You should see it, Christy. Just drive out there, take a peek and a picture, and you'll be good. The mountains are where it's at!

You have such a beautiful family, and your little one cracks me up. *I* had a little ping in my heart when I realized that in a couple of years he'd be all growed-up...I can only imagine how you feel. :-)

I lived "up North" in Minnesota for three years, where they had things called cluster flies, cluster ladybugs, and tent worms. I was beyond disgusted and appalled, and by the time August rolled around, I had a case of heebie-jeebies so bad that I couldn't bear to keep my blinds open. Worms, Chrisy. CRAWLING all over the house & windows. Ten thousand black flies that manage to sneak into microscopic crevices to invade the house. Door runners filled with dead ladybugs.

Maybe the lake is better in September. :-)

I think your husband looks like a totally normal guy there... why does dislike the pic?

And I don't blame you one bit for not swimming. Ewww! A ring of flies on the beach... nice.

You let those precious boys in that icky water??!! Ewwwwwww! It is beautiful from afar, and that's about it as far as I'm concerned... but I'm a water snob... :)

Chrisy,I think that our boys must be related, somehow. The "funky whiteness" you refer to is quite similar to my boys skin tone. We prefer to refer to it as "chic" :) They are handsome dudes! BTW, Al has a similar Scooby Do tee that he loves to wear on the weekends.xo Robin

I forgot what this post was about because at the end I developed a crush on your biceps.

The only way I know of to even marginally enjoy Antelope Island is to ride the trails on a mountain bike. On one of the two days that the horseflies are not out. And after the horse dung on the trail has disintegrated. But hey, it's another check mark on your list, right?

Sounds like a kids' paradise - swimming in exotic waters, and lots of wildlife! ;-)

We went there last September (I think) and it was icky. Luckily we went on State Park Free Day or something like that so we didn't spend any money. I'm glad we never got out of the car...those flies are gross!
Wow. Even worse than I remembered. Thanks for the warning...we will avoid.

Brine lake -- out.

Oahu -- in .

Got it!

Love your hat and you in your pink tee. I guess your hubby prefers a more preppy look, 'cause I thought he looks just fine.

Di I ever mention I HATE flies? I only hate maybe 2 things on this planet and flies are one. Roaches are the other. And while skin is not a thign to be shy of, 35 years ago maybe but now, nope.

Great pictures of your boys!

My family is the same way in that sometimes our best laid vacation plans turn into the "that was interesting, but never again" category. My wife and I like to take our son to places that are a little off the beaten path and sometimes they are great and others well.... interesting. I did click on the pictures and you can't miss the flies.

Best of luck with your running, family, etc.!

I think you look gorgeous. And your yard (lawn? not sure what you'd call it since I never had one growing up in downtown DC and still don't my deck only suburbs townhouse) AND view are just incredible. I can totally see the flies in that picture and I commend you for even dipping in a toe.

Yep you look pretty pissed to me! Or pretty and pissed !

Your own back yard is gorgeous - I would happily spend my time right there.

I will put that on my list of things I don't really have to do in my lifetime to consider it complete. I'll let your experience suffice.

Hey, as long as they haven't hit puberty yet, the speedo is adorable. I'm a fan of your hat, too.

Utah is becoming more and more interesting as a place to visit. Does the state allow the gays to come visit? :P

And Chris is a dreamboat. Definitely Demigod-approved! I think the superfriends shirt sealed the deal for me. LOL!

PS: That hat is very Lady-of-the-Hamptons-House. LOVEIT!
